A Chennai example

Turning buyer test reports into a compliance summary at a leather exporter

Footwear and leather goods exporters supply buyers with strict restricted-substance rules. The documentation is repetitive, high-stakes and ideal for a first Cowork exercise.

The task

Each season, an exporter receives lab test reports for dozens of articles, each checked against the buyer’s restricted substances list. The compliance team must confirm which articles passed, which failed and which tests are missing, then send the buyer a summary and plan any re-testing.

With Cowork

  1. The season’s test report PDFs and the buyer’s substance list go into one working folder.
  2. Cowork extracts each result into an Excel sheet: article, test, limit, result, pass or fail, and the page it came from.
  3. It lists articles with failed or missing tests and drafts a short summary for the buyer in your format.
  4. The compliance manager checks every failure against the original report before anything is sent.

Cowork does the reading and tabulating. The compliance decision and the buyer communication stay with the team.

The basics

Cowork, explained for busy Chennai teams

Cowork is the part of Claude that works through files to finish a job, rather than answering a single question in a chat.

It has been generally available in the Claude desktop app for Mac and Windows since April 2026, and it also runs on the web and mobile apps, on Claude’s paid plans. On the desktop it reads the files in a folder you choose: PDFs, Excel, Word, images. It plans the steps and produces a finished spreadsheet with working formulas, a document or a deck. It can also run a task on a schedule, such as a weekly report that rebuilds itself every Monday morning.

Getting value from it is mostly about two skills: writing a brief that spells out the result, and checking what comes back. Both are quick to learn with practice on your own files, and slow to learn alone.

Buyer data, test reports and other things to protect

Chennai exporters and engineering teams work with buyers’ specifications and confidential test data; retailers hold customer information. Before Cowork goes near any of it, check what your contracts and policies allow.

The rules we set follow Anthropic’s own safety guidance: a dedicated folder of copies, Cowork asking before it acts, deletion protection on, no buyer, customs, GST or bank portals, and awareness of prompt injection, where a document carries hidden instructions. The user remains responsible for what Claude does.

Files Cowork works on are processed on Anthropic’s servers, and Team and Enterprise data is not used to train its models. India’s DPDP Rules were notified in November 2025, with the main obligations applying from 2027. Team and Enterprise admins can switch Cowork on for chosen teams and control connectors and browser access.

Claude Cowork questions from Chennai organisations

Do you deliver Claude Cowork training in person in Chennai?

Yes. I’m based in Mumbai and run half-day and full-day sessions at offices across Chennai, as well as live online sessions for teams split across locations.

Can Cowork read lab test reports and certificates?

Yes. It reads PDFs, including scanned ones, and can tabulate results from many reports. Accuracy drops with poor scans, so a compliance person should always check failures and borderline results against the original report.

Is Cowork useful for automotive engineering teams?

For documentation-heavy work, yes: compliance matrices, test report summaries, supplier document checks and status reports. Engineering judgement and sign-off stay with qualified engineers.

Which Claude plan do we need?

Cowork is part of every paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Small teams often start on Pro or Team; heavy daily users may need Max, because Cowork uses more allowance than chat.

Can Cowork work with Tamil content?

Claude can read and write Tamil, so Cowork can handle Tamil documents and drafts. Sessions are delivered in English, and Tamil output should be checked by a fluent colleague.

Is it safe to put buyer specifications into Cowork?

Only if your contracts allow it. Use a dedicated folder of copies, keep approvals on, and follow your company’s data rules. Team and Enterprise data is not used to train Anthropic’s models.

What happens after the training?

Each person leaves with at least one task running in Cowork, saved Skills for repeat work and a short list of limits. I check in after 30 days to see what your team is still using.
