Engineers vs everyone else

Claude Code is for your developers. Cowork is for the rest of the floor.

It’s a common mix-up in Bengaluru. Anthropic’s Claude Code is a coding agent for software developers. Claude Cowork brings similar agent abilities to everyday knowledge work.

Cowork has been generally available in the Claude desktop app for Mac and Windows since April 2026, and it runs on the web and mobile apps too, as part of Claude’s paid plans. You point it at a folder, describe the result, and it reads the files, plans the steps and saves an Excel workbook with working formulas, a Word document or a slide deck. It can also run on a schedule, for example rebuilding a quotation tracker every morning.

For a company with both, the sensible split is Claude Code training for the developers and Cowork training for quality, sales, operations, finance and research staff. The data rules and the review habits should be shared across both.

A Bengaluru example

Answering an RFQ at a precision-engineering firm in Peenya

Peenya’s machine shops and fabricators win business by quoting quickly and accurately. This is the exercise I use with estimating and sales engineering teams.

The task

A customer sends an RFQ pack: a drawing list, a specification sheet, quality requirements and commercial terms, across eight files. The estimator must check what the shop can make, what needs outsourcing such as plating or heat treatment, and what to ask the customer before quoting.

With Cowork

  1. The RFQ files go into one folder, alongside the shop’s capability list and past quotations for similar parts.
  2. Cowork extracts each part’s material, tolerances, finish and quantity into an Excel sheet.
  3. It flags requirements outside the capability list and items needing outside processes.
  4. It drafts a list of clarification questions and a quotation cover note from past wording.

Pricing and the decision to quote stay with the estimator. Cowork removes the hours of reading and retyping.

Safe use

Customer drawings, data rooms and other things to protect

Bengaluru companies often hold other people’s intellectual property: a customer’s drawings, an aerospace prime’s specifications, a start-up’s confidential data room. Before anyone uses Cowork on them, check what your contracts and NDAs allow.

The practical rules we set in training follow Anthropic’s safety guidance: a dedicated folder of copies, approvals on while learning, deletion protection on, no customer or supplier portals, and awareness of prompt injection, where a document or web page carries instructions meant to mislead an agent. Anthropic is clear that the user remains responsible for what Claude does.

Files Cowork works on are processed on Anthropic’s servers, and Team and Enterprise data is not used to train its models. For personal data, India’s DPDP Rules were notified in November 2025, with the main obligations applying from 2027. Admins on Team and Enterprise can switch Cowork on for chosen teams and control browser access and connectors.

Claude Cowork questions from Bengaluru teams

What is the difference between Claude Code and Claude Cowork?

Claude Code is Anthropic’s agent for software development. Claude Cowork applies similar abilities to everyday work with documents, spreadsheets and reports. Developers usually need Claude Code training; quality, sales, operations and research teams need Cowork.

Can Cowork read engineering drawings?

It can read PDFs and images, and it handles drawing lists, specification tables and title-block text well. Detailed geometric interpretation is less reliable, so a qualified engineer should check anything that affects manufacturing.

Is it safe to use Cowork on customer drawings or a data room?

Only if your contracts and NDAs allow it. Use a dedicated folder of copies, keep approvals on, and follow your company’s rules. Files are processed on Anthropic’s servers, and Team and Enterprise data is not used for training.

Do you deliver in person in Bengaluru?

Yes. I’m based in Mumbai and run in-person sessions at offices across Bengaluru, from Peenya to Whitefield, as well as live online sessions.

Which Claude plan do we need for Cowork?

Any paid plan includes Cowork: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. Small teams often start on Pro or Team. Team and Enterprise add admin controls, such as switching Cowork on for chosen teams.

How long is the training?

A half day covers setup, briefing, checking and outputs. A full day adds Skills, scheduled tasks and time for each person to set up a repeat task, plus a 30-day follow-up.

Can Cowork help a start-up with investor reporting?

Yes, for drafting from your own data: monthly updates, board packs and grant reports. A founder should check every figure before it goes to investors.
