Using AI vs building with AI

Most professionals need to use generative AI well: prompting, research, writing, analysis and checking output. Engineers need to build with it: APIs, RAG, agents and evaluation. Pick a course on the right side of that line.

Self-paced vs live

Self-paced courses are cheap and flexible, but most learners stall halfway. Live classes cost more and give you deadlines, feedback and someone to ask when you are stuck.

Certificate vs skill

A certificate helps a CV get noticed. What gets you hired or promoted is proof: three examples of real work you did faster or better with AI. No course can guarantee a job or a raise.

1Generative AI for Everyone

DeepLearning.AI on Coursera · taught by Andrew Ng · online, self-paced

Best for: non-technical professionals, managers and students who want a clear, honest foundation

Andrew Ng’s course is the most widely taken introduction to generative AI, and it earns that place. It explains how large language models work and how to prompt them, then walks through the lifecycle of a generative AI project, including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), fine-tuning and agents, and ends with what generative AI means for jobs, business strategy and responsible use.

No coding is needed. It is the course to take before you spend money on anything longer, because it shows you which side of the “use it” or “build with it” line you are on.

DurationAbout 6 hours (Coursera suggests 3 weeks at 1–2 hours a week)
LevelBeginner; no coding or maths needed
CostPrice not shown on the public page; the certificate is a paid upgrade and financial aid is available
CertificateShareable Coursera certificate from DeepLearning.AI
LanguageTaught in English, with subtitles

Pros

  • Clear, vendor-neutral explanation
  • Short enough to finish in a week
  • Covers RAG, fine-tuning and agents at concept level

Cons

  • No hands-on practice with tools
  • Certificate costs extra
  • Not enough on its own for a technical role

2Live training, not a self-paced courseTeams and 1-to-1

Hitesh Motwani: live generative AI training for teams and individuals

Best for: teams who want hands-on generative AI training on their own work, and professionals who want live coaching across several AI tools

This is the only live trainer in the top five, and it is a different kind of option from a course. Hitesh Motwani, author of Generative AI 360°, has trained 200,000+ professionals across 16+ countries, and his corporate clients include Google, Microsoft and Tata Group. His sessions follow one rule: people learn generative AI fastest on the work already on their desk. Participants bring real emails, reports, proposals, spreadsheets and decks, complete them with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot while he reviews their prompts and output, and leave with workflows they use the next morning.

Rather than one tool, the programme teaches the habits that carry across tools: giving context, breaking work into steps, checking output, and knowing when an AI agent should take over a multi-step task. There is a leadership session for founders and CXOs on where generative AI should go first. When a whole team saves time every week, that time compounds, and the organisation starts executing faster.

Pros

  • Practice on your own tasks, with live feedback
  • Covers several tools, not one vendor
  • Onsite in Mumbai, or online across India; English and Hindi

Cons

  • Not free, and not self-paced
  • Team fees are quoted per engagement, not listed
  • Not a university or vendor certification

Details of the curriculum and certificate are on the generative AI certification course page. Prefer to learn from home? See live generative AI training online. Individuals can join the AI Accelerator Program (a 3–4 month live cohort with 12 modules and 40+ hours of sessions; ₹45,000 shown in October 2026), and companies can book a generative AI trainer for teams across India.

Disclosure: this guide is published on Hitesh Motwani’s own site, and he is listed at number 2. Every other entry was checked on its provider’s page in October 2026 and links to its source.

Certificates

Generative AI certificates in India: what each one proves

Every course on this list ends with something, but a free badge, a Coursera certificate, a proctored vendor exam and an IIT certificate prove very different things. Know which one an employer or client in your field actually values.

CredentialIssued byHow you get itWhat it shows
Badge (Google Skills, OpenAI Academy)The vendorFinish a short free course, sometimes with a quizThat you completed an introduction

Red flags to avoid

  • “Official” or “government-approved” claims you cannot find on the issuer’s own site
  • Placement or salary guarantees
  • Syllabi stuck on 2023 tools, GANs alone, or retired product features
  • A countdown timer that resets every time you visit

How to choose

How to choose the right generative AI course for you or your team

Four questions settle most decisions: are you using AI or building with it, do you need a certificate, how much time can you protect each week, and will watching videos actually change how you work?

If you are…Start withThen
A complete beginnerGoogle Introduction to Generative AI (free, 45 min)Generative AI for Everyone
A college studentGenerative AI for Everyone, or OpenAI Academy’s AI for College StudentsNPTEL’s next generative AI run if you study engineering
A working professional who wants a certificateGoogle AI Professional CertificateDaily practice on your own tasks; a live programme if you stall
An engineer moving into AIIBM Generative AI Engineering, or Microsoft’s free courseIIT Delhi CEP or IIT Bombay if you want an IIT programme
A manager or founderGenerative AI for EveryoneA leadership session on where AI should go first in your business
An L&D or HR head training a teamLive, hands-on training on your team’s own workFree courses as self-paced follow-up

Individuals vs teams

Individuals do well with self-paced courses: start free, then pay only for the certificate or live programme you need. Teams need more than shared videos: common prompts, agreed data rules and practice on real tasks.

Free vs paid

The best free courses (Google, Microsoft, OpenAI Academy, NPTEL) teach most of the concepts in paid ones. Pay for live teaching, graded projects, mentoring or a certificate your field values. For a full list of free options from the Government of India and big tech, see our guide to the best free AI courses with certificate.

Is an IIT certificate worth it?

It can be, if you are moving into an AI role and want structured, faculty-led study with a respected name. If you only need to use AI in your current job, a short course plus practice gives far more value per rupee.

The case for live training

Courses teach concepts. Live training changes habits. In a hands-on session, people bring their own emails, reports, spreadsheets and decks, finish them with AI, and get feedback on their prompts while they work. They leave with workflows they use the next morning, and the time saved compounds across the team, week after week. If that is what you need, tell us about your team or read about live online generative AI training. If you would rather compare individual trainers than courses, see our list of the top AI trainers in India.

A sample learning path

An 8-week generative AI learning path that starts free

About two to three hours a week, plus daily practice on real work. It costs nothing until you choose a paid certificate or programme.

1

Weeks 1–2: Foundations

Take Google’s free Introduction to Generative AI, then Generative AI for Everyone. Each day, run one real task through ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot and compare the result with doing it yourself.

2

Weeks 3–4: Prompting and checking

Learn structured prompting (role, context, task, format, examples). Write reusable prompts for your five most frequent tasks, and practise checking facts, numbers and sources in every answer.

3

Weeks 5–6: Workflows

Turn one recurring job into a step-by-step workflow with review points: a weekly report, a proposal or a research brief. Try a research tool and a spreadsheet analysis on real data you are allowed to use.

4

Weeks 7–8: Agents and proof

Hand one multi-step task to an AI agent and review every step. Then choose your next step: a Google or IBM certificate, an IIT programme, or live training. Write up three before/after examples for your CV.

Want a longer route through ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and AI agents? Follow the free AI learning path. If agents are your main interest, compare the best agentic AI courses in India.

Syllabus checklist

What a good generative AI course should cover in 2026

Hold any syllabus, including ours, against this list. A course that spends most of its time on image generators or 2023-era tools, and none on checking output or data protection, is out of date.

TopicWhy it matters in 2026What a good course shows you
How LLMs workExplains why models are fluent but sometimes wrongTokens, context windows, training vs your data, and hallucination

FAQ

Generative AI courses in India: questions answered

For most beginners, DeepLearning.AI’s Generative AI for Everyone is the best start: about 6 hours, no coding, and clear on what AI can and cannot do. For a free Google badge, take Google’s 45-minute Introduction to Generative AI. For an IIT programme with live classes, look at IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi CEP. For a team that needs to use AI on its own work, live hands-on training works better than any video course.

Yes, with a caveat about what “certificate” means. Google’s Introduction to Generative AI on Google Skills is free and gives a badge. OpenAI Academy courses are free and award a badge if you pass the assessment with 80% or more. NPTEL courses are free to learn, but the certificate needs a paid proctored exam. Coursera courses usually charge for the certificate.

It ranges from nothing to about ₹1.8 lakh plus GST. Free courses come from Google, Microsoft and OpenAI. Coursera certificates need a subscription or a one-off fee. Edtech live programmes on this list cost ₹94,999 (Analytics Vidhya, list price) to ₹1,49,999 (Simplilearn). The IIT programmes cost ₹1,69,000 + 18% GST (IIT Delhi CEP) and ₹1,80,000 + GST (IIT Bombay). Corporate training is quoted per engagement.

Yes. Google’s free Introduction to Generative AI gives a Google Skills badge. For a fuller certificate from Google, take the Google AI Professional Certificate, Google AI Essentials or Google Prompting Essentials on Coursera, which need a paid subscription.

Yes. IIT Bombay’s Technocraft Centre for Applied AI offers a 5-month online Certificate in Generative AI with weekly live sessions from IIT Bombay faculty, delivered with Great Learning. The fee shown in October 2026 is ₹1,80,000 + GST, and graduates get a Certificate of Completion from IIT Bombay. Admissions run in batches, so check the next start date.

Not to use it. Generative AI for Everyone, Google’s courses and live workplace training need no coding. You need Python if you want to build applications: IBM’s professional certificate, Microsoft’s Generative AI for Beginners and the IIT Delhi programme all expect programming.

The basics take a weekend: Google’s introduction is 45 minutes and Generative AI for Everyone about 6 hours. Using AI well on your own work takes a few weeks of daily practice; the 8-week path on this page gets most professionals there. Building production applications is a months-long journey, which is why the technical programmes run for 5–6 months.

If you want to use AI in your current role, the Google AI Professional Certificate or live hands-on training on your own work. If you are moving into a technical AI role, an IIT programme or IBM’s engineering certificate. Pick a format you can sustain alongside work: weekend live classes suit some people, short self-paced lessons suit others.

They are worth it if you want structured, faculty-led technical study and the IIT name will help your career move. IIT Delhi’s programme is graded, which makes its certificate more meaningful. If you only need to use AI better in your current job, a short course plus daily practice gives far more value per rupee.

No. Be wary of any course that promises a job, placement or salary. A certificate helps a CV get noticed; what makes the difference is evidence of real work you have done with AI, such as a report you sped up or an analysis you checked.

Partly. The Government of India’s free Yuva AI for All course on FutureSkills Prime can be taken in Hindi and 10 other Indian languages besides English. Most other courses on this list are in English with subtitles. Live trainers such as Hitesh Motwani teach in English and Hindi, and the AI tools themselves can reply in Hindi.

A course teaches you; a certification tests you. Most courses end with a completion certificate or badge. Proctored exams such as Microsoft’s AI-901 or the AWS Certified AI Practitioner test your knowledge independently. Graded programmes such as IIT Delhi CEP sit in between.

Self-paced courses are a cheap way to give everyone the basics. Live training is what changes how a team works: people practise on their own tasks, agree shared prompts and data rules, and get feedback. Many companies do both: free courses for everyone, plus hands-on sessions for the teams that use AI most.

Next step
