Highest-Paying AI Jobs in India (2026-27): Top 10 Roles With Salary Data

Quick answer: the highest-paying AI jobs in India are leadership and senior specialist roles: director of data science or AI (AmbitionBox’s typical range ₹74.7–82.6 lakh a year at 10–20 years’ experience), forward deployed engineer (₹35–45 lakh for early-stage roles in a CIEL HR study), senior applied scientist, staff ML engineer and principal data scientist. Entry-level AI salaries are far lower, and pay depends more on the company than on the title. These are ranges reported by named sources, not promises.

How to read AI salary figures without being misled

Search for this topic and you will find blogs quoting ₹50 lakh or ₹1 crore for almost every AI title, often with no source. We used only figures we could open and check, and we show the sample behind each one.

Where the numbers come from

Most ranges below are AmbitionBox’s “typical salary range” for the job title in India, built from salaries submitted by employees, with the experience band and number of salaries it is based on. We checked October 2026 (pages updated between 9 and 26 October 2026). Where AmbitionBox has no page, we use a named study or Salary.com and say so.

Small samples, big caveats

Some new titles have only a few dozen salaries behind them, such as LLM engineer (27) or senior applied scientist (19). We flag those. A title with 60,000 salaries behind it, like data scientist, is a far steadier guide.

Ranges, not promises

These are ranges reported by each source, not offers and not guarantees. The same title can pay three or four times more at a global product company than at an IT services firm. No course, bootcamp or certificate guarantees any of these salaries.

The list

The 10 highest-paying AI jobs in India, role by role

For each role: what the job is, the skills it needs, how people usually move in, and the salary ranges reported by named sources, with the sample size behind each figure.

1Director of data science or AI

Typical route: data scientist or ML engineer → lead → manager → director

Best for: senior practitioners who want to own an AI portfolio, a team and a budget

The top of the AI salary ladder in India is leadership, not a single technical skill. A director of data science or AI sets the roadmap, decides which problems are worth solving with machine learning or generative AI, hires and grows the team, and answers to the business for results. In global capability centres (GCCs) and product companies this often includes governance: model risk, data protection and responsible AI.

Skills that matter: a strong technical base, portfolio thinking (which ten use cases, in what order), stakeholder management, budgeting, and the judgement to kill projects that will not pay back. How people move in: rarely by course alone; usually after years leading a data science or ML team and shipping systems that the business still uses.

Reported range₹74.7–82.6 lakh a year (AmbitionBox, 10–20 years’ experience, 290 salaries)
One step belowData science manager: ₹37–40.9 lakh (5–14 years, 2,600 salaries)
Where these roles sitGCCs, product companies, large banks and consulting firms

Pros

  • Highest pay ceiling in this list
  • Shapes strategy, not just models

Cons

  • Takes a decade or more
  • Few roles, strong competition

2Forward deployed engineer (FDE)

Typical route: software engineer or solutions engineer plus applied AI

Best for: engineers who code well and enjoy working directly with customers

An FDE takes an AI product into one customer’s business and makes it work there: discovery with non-technical people, building retrieval pipelines and agents against the customer’s real systems, and staying until it runs in production. AI labs and enterprise software companies now hire FDEs in India. A CIEL HR study published in August 2026 reported a 130% rise in FDE hiring, with 52 organisations recruiting in July 2026.

Pay data for this new title is thin and inconsistent, so we show two sources that disagree. For the skills checklist, projects and interview questions, see our forward deployed engineer roadmap.

CIEL HR (Aug 2026)Early-stage FDE roles ₹35–45 lakh; experienced specialists ₹70–90 lakh; some AI infrastructure mandates ₹80 lakh–1.4 crore
Salary.comMedian ₹14,07,380; 25th–75th percentile ₹11.3–16.5 lakh (data as of 22 April 2025)
Core skillsProduction Python and APIs, RAG, agents and MCP, evaluation, cloud deployment, customer discovery

Pros

  • Fast-growing demand
  • Combines engineering with client impact

Cons

  • Public salary data is thin and contradictory
  • Usually needs several years of engineering

3Applied scientist or AI research scientist

Typical route: MTech, MS or PhD in ML; strong publications or competition record

Best for: people with deep maths and ML research skills who want to invent, not just integrate

Applied scientists turn research into product: new ranking, recommendation, speech or language models, trained and evaluated at scale. Research scientists push further toward new methods. In India these roles cluster in big tech labs, e-commerce and a few AI-first startups.

Skills: deep learning, statistics, experiment design, PyTorch, reading and reproducing papers, large-scale training. How people move in: usually through a research-heavy master’s or PhD, internships at research labs, or a strong track record as an ML engineer on modelling work.

Senior applied scientist₹73.9–81.7 lakh (4–9 years; only 19 salaries, so treat with care)
Applied scientist₹34.6–38.2 lakh (1–6 years; 39 salaries)
AI research scientist₹15.7–17.3 lakh (0–12 years; 22 salaries)

Pros

  • Very high ceiling at top labs
  • Intellectually demanding work

Cons

  • Small number of roles
  • Advanced degrees usually expected

Sources: senior applied scientist · applied scientist · AI research scientist (AmbitionBox), checked October 2026

4Machine learning engineer (senior to staff)

Typical route: software engineer or data scientist → ML engineer

Best for: engineers who like building reliable systems around models

ML engineers build, deploy and maintain the systems that train and serve models: feature pipelines, training jobs, model serving, monitoring and, increasingly, LLM-based features. It is the single most common well-paid AI role in India, and the spread is huge. AmbitionBox shows ML engineers at Google reporting ₹25.8–37.9 lakh and at TCS ₹6.4–7.2 lakh for the same title.

Skills: Python, data structures, ML fundamentals, cloud, Docker, model serving, monitoring and now LLM APIs and evaluation. How people move in: from backend engineering by adding ML and shipping one model into production, or from data science by getting much stronger at engineering.

Staff ML engineer₹66.6–83.1 lakh (2–16 years; 49 salaries)
Lead ML engineer₹35–39.2 lakh (4–12 years; 261 salaries)
Senior ML engineer₹27.3–30.2 lakh (2–9 years; 2,000 salaries)
ML engineer₹12.6–13.9 lakh (1–6 years; 9,800 salaries)

Pros

  • Many openings at every level
  • Clear progression to staff and principal

Cons

  • Pay varies widely by employer
  • On-call and production pressure

Sources: staff · lead · senior · ML engineer (AmbitionBox), checked October 2026

5Principal data scientist

Typical route: data scientist → senior → lead → principal

Best for: analytical people who want to stay hands-on while leading the hardest problems

A principal data scientist is the senior individual contributor of a data science team: framing ambiguous business questions, choosing methods, reviewing others’ work and owning the models that matter most, from pricing and risk to forecasting and experimentation. Data science is the largest AI-adjacent title on AmbitionBox, with over 61,000 salaries reported.

Skills: statistics, experimentation, SQL and Python, ML, causal thinking, and explaining results to leaders. How people move in: from analyst or engineering roles via a strong portfolio of real analyses, then years of delivery.

Principal data scientist₹52.2–57.7 lakh (7–18 years; 940 salaries)
Lead data scientist₹34.1–37.7 lakh (5–14 years; 4,800 salaries)
Senior data scientist₹28.2–31.2 lakh (3–11 years; 17,300 salaries)
Data scientist₹15.2–16.8 lakh (1–8 years; 61,700 salaries)

Pros

  • Large, mature job market
  • Senior IC path without managing people

Cons

  • Crowded at junior level
  • Generative AI is changing what juniors do

Sources: principal · lead · senior · data scientist (AmbitionBox), checked October 2026

6AI solution architect

Typical route: solution or cloud architect → AI specialisation

Best for: experienced architects who can design AI systems that fit real enterprise constraints

AI solution architects design how AI fits into an organisation’s systems: which models, where data lives, how retrieval and agents connect to existing applications, security and access control, and cost. They work with sales before a deal and with delivery teams after it.

Skills: cloud architecture, integration patterns, data platforms, LLM and RAG design, security and governance, writing clear designs. How people move in: mostly from cloud, data or enterprise architecture by adding hands-on generative AI build experience.

AI solution architect₹35.9–41.6 lakh (7–20 years; 84 salaries)
Data architect₹33.9–37.4 lakh (8–18 years; 2,900 salaries)
Solution architect (all)₹32.4–35.8 lakh (8–18 years; 23,200 salaries)

Pros

  • Senior, well-paid and in demand
  • Broad view across business and tech

Cons

  • Needs years of architecture experience
  • Less hands-on coding

Sources: AI solution architect · data architect · solution architect (AmbitionBox), checked October 2026

7AI engineer (lead and mid-level)

Typical route: software engineer → AI engineer

Best for: software engineers who want to build AI features, agents and pipelines

“AI engineer” has become the umbrella title for engineers who build products on top of models: LLM features, retrieval, agents, evaluation and the plumbing around them. It overlaps with ML engineering but leans more on APIs and less on training. Coding agents such as Claude Code are now part of the daily toolkit.

Skills: strong software engineering, LLM APIs and structured output, RAG, agents and MCP, evaluation, cost and latency control. How people move in: by shipping two or three AI features at work or in a portfolio; a weekend AI engineering bootcamp is a common route.

Lead AI engineer₹36.8–40.7 lakh (1–16 years; 322 salaries)
AI/ML engineer₹16.5–18.2 lakh (0–6 years; 10,600 salaries)
AI engineer₹15–16.5 lakh (1–6 years; 5,300 salaries)

Pros

  • Fastest route for existing developers
  • Lots of openings

Cons

  • Title used loosely by employers
  • Tools change every few months

Sources: lead AI engineer · AI/ML engineer · AI engineer (AmbitionBox), checked October 2026

8AI product manager

Typical route: product manager, engineer or analyst → AI PM

Best for: product people who understand both users and what models can and cannot do

AI product managers decide what an AI feature should do, how to measure whether it works, and when it is safe to ship. The job adds evaluation, failure modes, data needs and cost to the usual product work. It is one of the few high-paying AI roles that does not require writing production code.

Skills: product discovery, writing specs and evaluation criteria, prototyping with AI tools, basic understanding of RAG and agents, data literacy. How people move in: from product management by leading one AI feature end to end, or from engineering and analytics into product.

AI product manager₹28.2–31.1 lakh (0–20 years; 516 salaries)
Senior product manager (all)₹36.1–39.9 lakh (5–15 years; 22,700 salaries)

Pros

  • High pay without heavy coding
  • Visible, cross-functional role

Cons

  • Hard to enter without product experience
  • Accountable for fuzzy outcomes

Sources: AI product manager · senior product manager (AmbitionBox), checked October 2026

9Generative AI or LLM engineer

Typical route: developer → GenAI engineer

Best for: developers who want to specialise in large language models

GenAI and LLM engineers build applications on large language models: retrieval systems, agents, fine-tuning, guardrails and evaluation. It is the title most blogs put at the top of AI salary lists. The reported data is more modest: AmbitionBox’s generative AI engineer page (633 salaries, 0–13 years) shows a typical range of ₹9.2–10.1 lakh, because many holders of the new title are early in their careers. Senior people with the same skills often carry the titles in entries 4 and 7.

Skills: LLM APIs, RAG, agent frameworks, fine-tuning with PEFT, evaluation, prompt and context design, deployment. How people move in: by building and shipping LLM projects; this is where most AI bootcamps in India focus.

Senior generative AI engineer₹17.4–19.2 lakh (2–9 years; 34 salaries)
LLM engineer₹14–15.5 lakh (1–4 years; 27 salaries)
Generative AI engineer₹9.2–10.1 lakh (0–13 years; 633 salaries)

Pros

  • Direct demand from AI-first companies
  • Skills transfer to AI engineer and FDE roles

Cons

  • Reported pay lower than headlines suggest
  • Small samples for senior titles

Sources: senior GenAI engineer · LLM engineer · generative AI engineer (AmbitionBox), checked October 2026

10MLOps engineer

Typical route: DevOps or data engineer → MLOps

Best for: DevOps, platform and data engineers who want to move into AI

MLOps engineers keep models running: automated training and deployment pipelines, model registries, monitoring for drift and failures, and the infrastructure for serving LLMs at a sensible cost. As companies move from AI pilots to production, this work becomes the bottleneck, which is why the role is on this list despite a modest headline range.

Skills: Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, a cloud platform, ML pipelines, observability, and increasingly LLM serving and GPU cost control. How people move in: from DevOps or data engineering by running one model pipeline end to end.

Reported range₹13.5–15.6 lakh a year (AmbitionBox, 1–8 years’ experience, 207 salaries)
Next stepML platform lead or staff ML engineer (see entry 4)

Pros

  • Natural move for DevOps and data engineers
  • Production skills stay valuable as tools change

Cons

  • Lower headline range than research roles
  • Small sample on AmbitionBox

Source: AmbitionBox: MLOps engineer, checked October 2026

For freshers

Highest-paying AI jobs in India for freshers

Freshers rarely start in the roles above. These are the entry titles with the most data on AmbitionBox, checked October 2026. Monthly figures are simply the annual range divided by twelve, before tax and deductions, to answer the “per month” question.

AI engineer intern₹3.6–4 lakh₹30,000–33,0000–2 years; 53 salaries

What actually helps freshers

Two or three projects that solve a real problem, deployed and written up; internships; open-source contributions; and strong fundamentals in Python, SQL and statistics. Certificates help a CV get past filters, but hiring managers ask what you built. Our guide to AI certifications in India covers which ones employers recognise.

AI jobs that pay less than you think

Some titles that sound lucrative report modest ranges. Prompt engineer is the clearest example. Sources: prompt engineer, NLP engineer, deep learning engineer, data engineer and the fresher titles above (AmbitionBox).

TitleReported range (per year)Why it matters
Prompt engineer₹6–6.6 lakh (0–18 years; 351 salaries)Prompting is now a skill inside most jobs, not a premium job on its own
NLP engineer₹10.6–12.6 lakh (1–8 years; 207 salaries)Much NLP work has moved to LLM engineering titles
Deep learning engineer₹12.5–14 lakh (0–6 years; 420 salaries)Solid, but below ML engineer at senior levels
Data engineer₹11.5–12.7 lakh (1–7 years)A strong feeder role for MLOps and AI engineering
What moves pay

Company, industry and city: what really drives AI salaries

Using the machine learning engineer title, which has 9,800 salaries on AmbitionBox, you can see how much the same job varies. The industry gap is bigger than the city gap. Source: AmbitionBox ML engineer salaries, checked October 2026.

CityML engineer range (AmbitionBox)IndustryML engineer range (AmbitionBox)
Bengaluru₹13.4–14.8 lakh (2,700 salaries)Internet₹18.2–20.8 lakh
Hyderabad₹12.4–13.7 lakh (1,300)Analytics and KPO₹18.4–20.4 lakh
Mumbai₹10.8–11.9 lakh (650)Software product₹17.6–19.5 lakh
Chennai₹10.7–11.9 lakh (645)Management consulting₹14.3–15.9 lakh
Pune₹10–11.1 lakh (1,500)IT services and consulting₹9.7–10.7 lakh

Company type first

Internet, product and analytics firms report roughly double the ML engineer range of IT services firms. Moving employer type often raises pay more than changing title.

Seniority second

Across every role, the jump from mid-level to lead or staff is where AI pay pulls away. That jump comes from owning systems in production, not from more courses.

Location third

Bengaluru and Hyderabad lead for ML engineers, but remote roles with global companies and GCCs are narrowing the gap for people elsewhere.

How to move in

How to move into a high-paying AI role from where you are

The route depends on your starting point. In every case, employers pay for proof that you have shipped something that works, not for the number of courses you completed.

1

Software engineers

Aim for AI engineer, then FDE or ML engineer. Ship RAG and agent projects, learn evaluation and deployment, and use AI coding agents daily. Teams can build these skills together with hands-on Claude Code training or FDE corporate training built around their own codebase. Individual engineers can follow a forward deployed engineer course with 1-to-1 coaching on their own project.

2

Analysts and data people

Aim for data scientist, then ML engineer or principal. Strengthen statistics and Python, ship one model to production, and learn to explain results to leaders.

3

Product, operations and business people

Aim for AI product manager or an AI-enabled version of your current role. Learn what models can and cannot do, prototype with no-code agents, and lead one AI project at work. Agentic AI training shows teams how to design and supervise agents without coding.

4

Freshers and students

Start with fundamentals and two deployed projects. Follow the free AI learning path, then add a recognised certification and an internship.

Courses that map to these routes: agentic AI courses, Claude Code courses and generative AI courses in India. If you want structure and deadlines, compare the AI bootcamps in India.

For managers and L&D

Not changing jobs? AI still changes what your work is worth

Most people reading this will not become ML engineers, and do not need to. The bigger shift is that every role now has an AI-assisted version that gets more done in the same week.

For individuals

Use AI on your own reports, analysis, proposals and emails until it is routine. The skills overlap with the AI product manager and AI engineer roles above, and they compound: every workflow you build saves time again next week.

For teams

Hiring AI specialists at the salaries above is expensive and slow. Training the team you already have to use AI on its real work is faster: people bring their own tasks, finish them with AI under supervision, and leave with workflows they use the next morning, so the organisation executes faster.

Method. On 26 October 2026 we opened AmbitionBox’s India salary page for each job title and recorded the typical range, experience band, number of salaries and update date. Where AmbitionBox had no page (forward deployed engineer), we used CIEL HR’s August 2026 study as reported by CXOToday and Salary.com’s India estimate. We left out figures we could not open and check, and we never present a range as a promise.

Highest-paying AI jobs in India: questions answered

Leadership and senior specialist roles. AmbitionBox reports a typical range of ₹74.7–82.6 lakh a year for directors of data science (10–20 years’ experience), and similar ranges for senior applied scientists and staff ML engineers, though those two have small samples. A CIEL HR study put experienced forward deployed engineers at ₹70–90 lakh.

AmbitionBox shows a typical range of ₹15–16.5 lakh a year for AI engineers with 1–6 years’ experience (5,300 salaries) and ₹16.5–18.2 lakh for AI/ML engineers with 0–6 years (10,600 salaries). Lead AI engineers report ₹36.8–40.7 lakh.

Among entry titles with solid data, associate data scientist (₹9.5–10.5 lakh, 0–5 years) and computer vision engineer (₹11–12.2 lakh, 0–5 years) report the highest typical ranges on AmbitionBox. Internships report about ₹3.3–4 lakh a year.

Dividing AmbitionBox’s annual ranges by twelve, before tax: about ₹6.2–6.9 lakh a month for directors of data science, ₹2.3–2.5 lakh for senior ML engineers, ₹1.3–1.4 lakh for data scientists and ₹79,000–87,500 for associate data scientists. In-hand pay is lower after tax and deductions.

Estimates differ widely. CIEL HR’s August 2026 study put early-stage FDE roles at ₹35–45 lakh and experienced specialists at ₹70–90 lakh. Salary.com’s estimate, based on April 2025 data, shows a median of about ₹14.1 lakh. Our FDE roadmap covers the skills behind the role.

Not on its own. AmbitionBox reports a typical range of ₹6–6.6 lakh a year for prompt engineers (351 salaries). Prompting is now a skill inside most AI and non-AI jobs rather than a premium standalone role.

Yes, but fewer of them. AI product manager (₹28.2–31.1 lakh on AmbitionBox) is the main example, along with AI strategy and leadership roles. Most other roles on this list need programming.

For applied scientist and research roles, usually yes. For ML engineer, AI engineer, FDE, MLOps and AI product roles, employers care more about what you have built and shipped than about the degree.

For ML engineers, AmbitionBox shows Bengaluru highest (₹13.4–14.8 lakh), then Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai and Pune. The industry gap is bigger: internet and analytics firms report about double the range of IT services firms.

No. Courses, bootcamps and certifications can help you learn and get noticed, but no programme can guarantee a job or a salary. Employers pay for proof of work and experience.

For an experienced software engineer, often six to twelve months of focused building to reach AI engineer interviews. For people starting from non-technical roles, AI product or AI-enabled versions of their current job are quicker routes than engineering.

Demand is shifting toward people who can take AI into production. CIEL HR reported a 130% rise in forward deployed engineer hiring over the year to July 2026, across 52 organisations recruiting for the role.
